Hovd lies at the foot of the Altai Mountains, and has about 30,000 people (2006). At the edge of the city flows the river Bujant Gol. The city is the administrative center of Hovd province.

Kindergarten: There are 10 kindergartens in which children aged two to six years to be educated and cared for.

Middle School: By the year 2007, the compulsory 10 years. Since 2008, this is 11 years.

University: There are two universities. The "Agricultural University" and the "Hovd University. The Khovd University was founded in 1979 as a branch of the Mongolian State University, but is independent since 2004. At the University study about 1800 students. They come from all aimags of western Mongolia (Uvs, Gobi-Altai, Baynes Ölgie, Zawhan) and (part of Russia) from the People's Republic of Tuva.

In Hovd there is a large theater, a museum, a children's palace and a stage.

The airport of Khovd (ZMKD / HVD) has two runways (one attached), and is serviced with regular flights to and from Ulaanbaatar.
