Ulaangom is located in the west of the country, 1417 km away from the national capital Ulan Bator. The capital of Uvs province is Ulaangom which lies 930m above the Sea level. The province is named after Mongolia's biggest lake, Uvs Nuur (Увс нуур).  In Uvs province you can measure the lowest temperature, it reaches sometimes under -50 degrees.

Ulaangom is located 30 km South-West from the lake Uvs Nuur shore and on the slopes of the Kharkhiraa mountains, 120 km South to the Russian border. The city has a population of 22,300 (end of 2008 ) or 28.9% of Uvs aimag population total.

There are many educational and cultural organizations and institutions in the city. There is a vocational college and secondary schools.

Ulaangom is connected to the Russian border by Highway, and imports its electricity from the Russian Federation. There is one airport (ULO) in the city which has direct flights from or to Ulaanbaatar.
